COMPULSORY EDUCATION LEGISLATION REPORT
Committee Report: Unfavorable on each bill (did not pass out of committee)
Family Heritage Matters - 2000 Legislative Update
March 16th, 2000
Dear WCFS Families,
This year, FHM has represented MACHE and Maryland home educators in Annapolis on three crucial pieces of legislation (HB 271/SB298/SB194), and has spent additional time educating Senators and Delegates on a joint bill (SB 152/HB 127) that would prohibit 18 yr. old and under student drivers from having more than two passengers in a vehicle at one time - creating unnecessary hardship to families with more than three siblings. You may read the bills online at: http://mlis.state.md.us/
While attending two days of committee hearings at the General Assembly, I gave testimony in opposition to the three crucial bills which would have raised the Compulsory Attendance age to 18. We were encouraged to see a positive response towards our position on the bill at the first hearing. On the second day of testimony, Attorney Scott Somerville (HSLDA) met with me prior to the hearing and we discussed strategy and prayed together. God answered our prayer. Before we gave testimony the Vice-Chairwoman and the Chairman of the Committee gave their own comments to the sponsoring Senator as to the inappropriateness of the legislation. FHMs opposition centered on the fact that students who home school through county boards of education in Maryland would be harmed (see reverse point #3). Praise God for the favor He gave us with the committees; God rules in the affairs of men. Please remember to pray for your representatives and use our freedom for righteousness sake.
Thankfully, we can report that as of today, all five bills have either already received unfavorable reports or will most likely not have enough votes in committee if they come to a committee vote.
Thanks to our intern, Timothy Kube - WCFS senior, we are continuing to monitor legislation daily, and as of today, have reviewed over 3000 pieces of legislation for the Year 2000 Maryland General Assembly.
If anyone has an inquiry to make they may direct it to us at legis@wcfs.edu or call us.
